Sturminster Marshall First School

Grow, Achieve, Inspire, Nurture. SMFS where learning is an adventure.

Friday 21st January

We have been very busy in Robins class since the start of the Spring term filling our heads with knowledge across a range of subjects.

This half term we will be studying Toys throughout History, Algorithms in ICT, the United Kingdom, animals including humans in science and we will design alien puppets based on one of our English books Beegu.

In maths we are now exploring numbers to 20 and will begin addition and subtraction within 20 over the next two weeks. Practising our number bonds to 10 and 20 is helping will definitely help us with this!

In English we have just finished Beegu by Alexis Deacon and created our own versions of an alien story. Beegu really captured our imaginations in Robins and our heads were buzzing with ideas after a mysterious alien spaceship landed on the playground and a strange creature was seen running around the school! We soon discovered that the creature was a small, yellow alien called Beegu who was lost and very frightened. We made posters to teach the other children of the school how to look after her and wrote Beegu letters to explain that we were friendly and wanted to help.

Last Friday, we all had an opportunity to bring in our favourite toys to share with the class and talk about why we like them. Often our favourite toys have sentimental value or are special gifts from family or Santa and we love them very much. We had a brilliant time sharing our favourite toys with our friends in the afternoon. This then helped inspire our research into toys old and new. We found out what the differences were between old and new toys and even linked this to our science from last term about materials and their properties. We were very surprised to learn that some toys we play with today are based on toys from the Victorian era and many toys we still enjoy are those that our parents (and even grandparents) played with such as Lego, Top Trumps and Barbie.
