Sturminster Marshall First School

Grow, Achieve, Inspire, Nurture. SMFS where learning is an adventure.

Classes

At our village school, one of our greatest strengths is our flexibility. As a small school, the number of children in each year group naturally changes from year to year. This means our class structure is reviewed annually so that we can create the best possible learning environment for every child.

Rather than fixed classes that never change, we group year groups thoughtfully, taking into account class size, friendships, learning needs, and the benefits of mixed-age learning. This approach allows us to maintain small classes, strong relationships, and a calm, supportive atmosphere where children of all ages can thrive.

Our Classes This Year

This year, our school is organised into three classes:

Blackbirds (EYFS)
Our youngest learners begin their school journey in Blackbirds. This class follows the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, with a strong focus on learning through play, exploration, and developing confidence, independence, and curiosity.

Puffins (Years 1 and 2)

Puffins brings together children in Years 1 and 2. The class builds on early learning, supporting children as they develop key skills in reading, writing, and maths, while continuing to enjoy a creative, hands-on approach to learning.

Owls (Years 3 and 4)

Owls is home to our Years 3 and 4 pupils. Learning here encourages growing independence, deeper thinking, and collaboration, while still benefiting from the close support that mixed-age classes offer.

We are very proud of the way our children learn and grow together across the school. Our flexible class structure helps us ensure that every child is known, supported, and challenged, whatever their age or stage.
